General objectives:

Over the years computers have become an integral part of the office environment. Common activities performed in an organization involve maintaining documents, analyzing financial data, storing and retrieving records, and sharing presentations in business meetings. These tasks can be done quickly and easily by using appropriate tools. These tools enable users to create, manage, analyze, and share information. Aspiring professionals in any field need to acquire basic skills of the tools that can help them solve common problems at work and enhance their productivity. This module enables a student to use Microsoft Office 2007 software for creating, managing, analyzing, and sharing information.

 

Besides getting comfortable in office applications tool, this module will also familiarize students to Windows Operating system.  In addition, students will learn office productivity tools such as Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint.

This module consists of following sub-modules:

1.      IT Fundamentals and Windows OS

2.      Microsoft Word

3.      Microsoft Excel

4.      Microsoft PowerPoint

Learning outcomes:

IT Fundamentals

After completing the sub-module, the students will be able to:

·         Identify computer systems

·         Identify components of a PC system

·          Identify types of files used to organize data

·          Identify the evolution of Windows XP OS and how to log on and log off from Windows XP

·         Explore the Windows XP Desktop

·         Manage folders and files

·         Change the display

·         Use accessories

Microsoft Office Word 2007

After completing the sub-module, the students will be able to:

·         Explore the Word 2007 interface

·         Identify the features available in the Ribbon interface

·         View a Word document in different layouts

·         Edit text in a Word document

·         Format text

·         Format paragraphs

·         Insert headers and footers

·         Create tables

·         Insert graphics

·         Print a document

·         Use Mail Merge

Microsoft Office Excel 2007

After completing the sub-module, the students will be able to:

·         Explore the Excel 2007 environment

·         Perform basic operations in Excel 2007

·         Perform operations on data

·         Modify a worksheet

·         Use the Excel 2007 help feature

·         Manage worksheets

·         Use the undo and redo features

·         Use the sort and filter features

·         Use formulas and functions

·         Reference data

·         Format data

·         Enhance data presentation

·         Print worksheets

·         Create charts

·         Modify charts

·         Format Charts

·         Create a chart template

Microsoft PowerPoint 2007

After completing the sub-module, the students will be able to:

·         Explore the Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 interface

·         Identify the features available in the Ribbon interface

·         Work with PowerPoint 2007 presentations

·         Identify the views in PowerPoint 2007

·         Use the Help feature of PowerPoint 2007

·         Format text

·         Apply slide show effects

·         Work with charts

Learning and teaching approach used:

Assessment:

Continuous Assessment – 40%

1.    Lab work and Assignment                        :                       40%

 

Final Examination:               60%

2.    OLT Module Test:         60%

 

Students must obtain 40% each in the Continuous assessment of theory, practical and the semester end examination. The overall pass mark for the module is 50%.

Computer Overview: Introduction to Computer Systems, Application of computers, Overview of different generation of computers, Different types of computer systems, Benefits and Limitations of computers, Components of a PC system, Working of computers, Hardware, Software, Different Types of Data Organization: Text files, Data files, Graphic files, Audio files.

2.  Working with Windows XP: Operating System: Understanding, Role, Windows XP: Evolution, Log on, Log off, Turn off, Windows XP Desktop: Desktop icons, Taskbar, Exploring Windows Explorer: Folders Pane, Contents Pane, Toolbar, Managing files and folders, Change Display, Accessories

3. Introduction to Microsoft Office Word 2007: Introduction to the Word 2007 interface, Creating, Saving, Opening, Previewing and Closing Documents, Explore the Ribbon Tabs: Home, Insert, Page Layout, Review, View  Word Document: Print Layout, Web Layout, Outline View, Full Screen Reading View, Draft, Editing Text, Using Help in Word

4. Formatting a Document: Format Text-Modify Font, Highlight Text, Change Text Color, Copy Format, Clear Format, Change Case, Format Paragraphs, Paragraph Spacing, Line Spacing, align and Indent Text, Use Tabs, Create Different Lists, Borders and Shading, Styles, Insert Headers and Footers

5.  Working with Tables and Graphics: Work with Tables and Graphics: Create, Navigate, Modify, Format, Convert Text to Table and vice-versa, Work with Graphics-Insert Images and Charts

6.  Printing Documents and Using Mail Merge:  Print Documents-Margins, Page Orientation, Paper Size and Page Break. Modify Content, Print, and Use Mail Merge.

7. Introducing Microsoft Excel 2007: Explore Excel 2007 Environment: Office Button, Status Bar, Mini Toolbar, Quick Access Toolbar, Ribbon, Perform Basic Operations in Excel: Create, Save, Open, Navigate and Close Workbook, Perform Operations on Data: Enter, Move, Copy, Delete, Search, Modify Worksheet-Insert Rows, Columns, Cells, Use the Excel Help Feature

8. Managing Worksheets and Manipulating Data: Manage Worksheets: Insert, Delete, Copy, Format, Move Use Undo and Redo Features, Sort and Filter Data, Work with Formulas and Functions: Formula Bar, Enter Formulas in a Worksheet, Use Fill Handle, Functions, Use Functions, Copy Formulas and Functions, Referencing Data, Using Cell Referencing in Excel

9. Formatting Worksheets and Data Presentation:  Format Data: Text, Numbers, Date, Time, Enhance Data Presentation: Data, Borders, Background, Format, AutoFormat, Cell Styles

10. Printing Worksheets and Creating Charts:  Insert and Remove Page Breaks, Modify Page Setup, Preview and Print Worksheet, Create Chart, Modify Chart, Create a Chart Template.

11. Introducing Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007: Introduction to PowerPoint 2007 interface, Presentation: Create, Save, Open, Close, Explore the different Tabs in Ribbon: Home, Insert, Design, Animations, Slide Show, Review, View, Contextual, Dialog Box Launchers, Work with Presentations: Insert Text, Add and Delete Slides, Copy and Move Text, Insert Images, Add Headers and Footers, Change the Slide Background, Spell Check Utility, Print Presentation, Identify the Views in PowerPoint 2007: Normal, Slide Sorter, Notes page, Slide Show, Using Help in PowerPoint

 12. Enhancing a Presentation:  Enhance Presentation-Change Fonts, Text Case and Alignment, Create Different Types of Lists, Line Spacing, Apply Slide Show Effects: Custom Animation, Preset Animation, Transition Effects, and Work with Charts.
